English

This term’s writing will be based around the reading of Street Child.

Street Child is a fictional account of the experiences of Jim Jarvis, a young orphan who escapes the workhouse in 1860’s London and survives brutal treatment and desperate circumstances until he is taken in by Dr. Barnardo, founder of a school for the city’s “ragged” children.

Whole class reading

In contrast to Street Child, in our whole class reading sessions, we will focus on the story, Cogheart. This story is based around a strong-willed girl named Lily, who feels trapped in a life of Victorian stuffiness at her prim boarding school. But after her father -a famous inventor- disappears on a routine zeppelin flight, Lily’s life gets turned upside down.

Foundation subjects

We will be researching the Victorian era and finding out all about the matriarch of the British Empire, Queen Victoria. The subjects directly focused on will be History, Geography, P.S.H.E, Design and Technology and Art. Our novel will help us to understand more about London during the 19th century, which will help us to write our own atmospheric descriptive piece , a non-chronological report and historical stories in English lessons.

Knowledge Organisers

A Knowledge Organiser is an exciting tool displaying an array of information, vocabulary, facts, diagrams, maps and pictures. It contains the essential knowledge which children need to know about the unit of work they will be covering in each foundation subject. Knowledge organisers are regularly used during lessons and help children to recap on knowledge they have learnt throughout the term.
